Apakah Anda pernah mengalami hasil burn DVD anda terlihat kurang smooth ketika diputar dengan DVD player?
Saya ingin berbagi pengalaman mengenai hal yang satu ini yang diperoleh dari beberapa pengalaman sendiri, research, artikel dan referensi dari teman yang berkecimpung dalam DVD media.
Beberapa produksi DVD video yang saya buat, setelah selesai proses editing-rendering-burning-labeling, kemudian kita mainkan/play pada DVD player (red: DVD player stand alone yang biasa ada dirumah) kita dapat amati (kalau bisa mata jangan kedip) dari awal hingga akhir. Apakah ada bagian-bagian adegan/ klip tertentu yang berjalan kurang mulus, macet, tersendat, dengan tampilan gambar yang pecah dan suara aneh yang dihasilkan (cuiiit..cuitt.. seperti itu). Mungkin saja terkadang ada, terkadang tidak ada tampilan gambar yang pecah/rusak seperti itu. Bila demikian bisa dipastikan problemnya adalah pada masalah kompatibilitas antara DVD blank yang digunakan dengan DVD playernya.
Dari beberapa merk yang pernah saya coba terkadang sebuah DVD Video dapat berjalan dengan baik pada DVD player yang satu namun bisa timbul masalah pada DVD player merk yang lain. Bahkan dengan DVD player dengan merk yang sama sekalipun sering ditemui perbedaan hasil pembacaan optik pada disc dalam hal ini (kadang tampil di player ini bagus, kadang sebaliknya). Padahal ketika kita test data video yang ada dalam kepingan DVD tersebut utuh dan dapat berjalan mulus di DVD ROM komputer.
Mengenai jenis kepingan DVD-R, DVD+R, dsb. mana yang lebih baik kompatibiltasnya dengan DVD player?
Kalau kita amati dan mencari informasi teknis di internet, dari beberapa artikel yang pernah saya peroleh bahwa DVD-R memiliki kompatibilitas lebih tinggi dibanding DVD+R terhadap DVD player, oleh karena awalnya memang DVD-R muncul lebih dulu dibanding DVD+R. Meskipun untuk DVD player keluaran terbaru sudah sanggup membaca berbagai jenis format media DVD.
Dari hasil pencarian yang cukup lama (sebab saya sendiri juga bingung) sampailah saya kepada teman saya, dia sudah mencoba berbagai merk DVD blank, komplain pun sering diterimanya karena DVD Video yang dihasilkan kadang tersendat ketika diputar oleh si client. Pada akhirnya dia mencoba DVD blank dengan merk MAXELL dan hasilnya…. wah kompatibilitas lebih OK dan harganya pun cukup murah.

Maxell Records Top Scores Among Media Vendors in DV Magazine Posted Wednesday, 11 September, 2002
“Maxell Corporation of America, an engineering and marketing leader in recordable media products, posted top scores among media vendors in comprehensive DVD compatibility testing conducted by DV Magazine.
The DV Magazine test, which appeared in the July 2002 issue and is available online at http://www.dv.com, was designed to make DVD producers, vendors and consumers aware of the compatibility issues related to recordable DVD technology. The DV review comprised more than 2400 tests on 68 DVD players from 22 suppliers and five different DVD media formats from more than a dozen vendors.
Maxell DVD media were evaluated in two test categories: 4.7 GB DVD-R for authoring and 4.7 GB DVD-R for general applications. In the authoring test, Maxell topped all media vendors, including TDK and Verbatim, by achieving a compatibility score of 76 percent across a broad range of DVD hardware. Maxell was even more dominant in winning the DVD-R in the general use test by scoring 86 percent compatibility, well ahead of Imation, Memorex, Sony, TDK and Verbatim.
DV Magazine found a wide variation in compatibility among media vendors and concluded that DVD developers should show special care in selecting a brand of media because of the impact different brands have on compatibility.
According to the review, “There are wide variations in compatibility with a specific format of media based on the media vendor…Perhaps the best example of this is in the DVD-R general category where the worst brand of media had a compatibility rating of only 45 percent, while the best brand (Maxell) had a compatibility rating of 86 percent. Because DVD-R for general media is by far the most popular form of recordable DVD, the data illustrates a very important point for most DVD developers: media brand matters!”
